MORE ABOUT THE Lower middle FORK AMERICAN River:
THE RAPIDS: Smooth and easy Class II rapids make for a fun and relaxing day
The Lower Middle Fork American is the perfect float trip for people with small children and for apprehensive adults. The river is gentle and forgiving, with just enough excitement to make a young child squeal with anticipation and keep a cautious adult interested. Most of the time, the whitewater is more "riffle" than "rapid", allowing lots of time for reverie.
USUAL MINIMUM AGE: 5 years of age
THE RIVER SCENERY: An open canyon of oak and pine
The Lower Middle Fork canyon is wide and inviting. The river meanders slowly by oak tree groves; alder and cottonwood trees grow right out of the riverbed. Wild blackberry bushes dot the riverside, offering a delicious time-out for paddlers. This river and its canyon are not crowded. Chances are that you and the other people on your trip will be only rafters on this beautiful and remote stretch of river.
THE RIVER LOCATION: 45 minutes from Sacramento, near the town of Auburn
The Middle Fork is just 140 miles east of San Francisco and just 50 miles east of Sacramento. The All-Outdoors Middle Fork meeting place is right off I-80, making your commute easier and faster.
THE RAFTING SEASON: Sun-Thu, April-October
The Middle Fork is a dam-controlled river. Because the river's flows are regulated, its levels are dependable and extremely consistent.
MEALS: Freshly prepared riverside feasts
If water is late getting to our put-in area, we will take the time to sit down to a hearty picnic lunch on the beach. If the water is up at the time we get to the river, we will load the rafts and head downstream to a more remote beach to stop for lunch. We may even tie the rafts together in a quiet stretch of the river and float while we eat! A healthy variety of sandwiches, fruit, chips, drinks, and dessert will be enjoyed at the best location for each itinerary.
If you have special dietary requirements, we encourage you to tell us at the time of your reservation. We will do our very best to accommodate your needs.
GUEST INVOLVEMENT: How You Participate in Getting Down the River
All-Outdoors uses oar-rafts on this river. With this type of raft you can sit and enjoy yourself while the guide does all the work with their oars, or you can choose to assist them with your paddle. During the day you will also have the option of paddling a one- or two-person inflatable kayak on this stretch of the river without a guide. Paddling an inflatable kayak is like having your own private boat, just smaller. Keep in mind, all guests should be able to swim.
