&#8220;the world rushed in,&#8221; right?\u00a0\u00a0 Meaning it wasn&#8217;t just Bostonian tailors, Southern farmers, and small-town preachers who up and left their homes to try and strike it rich in California in 1849.\u00a0 People from literally all over the world jumped on steamers and made their way to the banks of the American River.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Why is Chili Bar called Chili Bar?\u00a0 No, not because the 49ers\u00a0 made tasty beans, but because there were so many Chilean miners in the region.\u00a0 Anyone who has been to the Gold Discovery State Park knows there were Chinese merchants here from the very beginning.\u00a0 There were also Europeans, Mexicans, and other folks as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Okeis-grave.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4038 alignright\" title=\"'s-grave\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Okeis-grave.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a>What fewer people know is that there was a Japanese colony here too!\u00a0 In 1869 the very first Japanse colony in the U.S was established in Gold Hill, just a few miles from\u00a0the AO\u00a0River Center.\u00a0 My grade school used to always take a tour to the grave site of the first Japanse person to be buried in the US&#8211;it was literally right next door to our classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arconservancy.org\/site\/c.psKZL3PFLrF\/b.5699385\/k.BEF4\/Home.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American River Conservancy<\/a> recently purchased the property where\u00a0the original colony&#8211;Wakamatsu&#8211;tried to grow tea, silk, and rice\u00a0in\u00a0 the 1800s.\u00a0 The site is also home to\u00a0the \u00a0historical Veercamp dairy (yes, we used to get our milk there before it closed) and ranch land.\u00a0 ARC is currently raising funds for the\u00a0restoration and recent\u00a0purchase of the property.\u00a0 They are already giving guided tours so you can see their progress and learn more about this bit of California history so close to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/river\/american-river-rafting.htm\">American River<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On August 20th they&#8217;re offering a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arconservancy.org\/site\/apps\/nlnet\/content2.aspx?c=psKZL3PFLrF&amp;b=5814259&amp;ct=10863385&amp;notoc=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wakamatsu\u00a0tour<\/a> in the morning&#8211;you can check it out the day after your Friday rafting trip or even squeeze it in before a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/river\/south-fork-american\/one-day-trips.htm\">South
