{"id":4027,"date":"2011-08-17T11:20:10","date_gmt":"2011-08-17T18:20:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/?p=4027"},"modified":"2023-06-19T18:13:19","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T01:13:19","slug":"friends-of-river-needs-our-and-your-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/friends-of-river-needs-our-and-your-help\/","title":{"rendered":"Friends of the River Needs Our Help and Your Help"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/31873.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4048 alignleft\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/31873-300x273.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/31873-300x273.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/31873.jpg 368w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>It all started in 1973 when\u00a0a group of friends came together to try and stop a dam that would drown the Stanislaus\u00a0River.\u00a0 Ten years later, as the\u00a0water of the New\u00a0Melones\u00a0Reservoir rose, their worst fears came true.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 40 years later,\u00a0\u00a0that initial group of friends\u00a0has grown into the largest river protection organization in California&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.friendsoftheriver.org\/site\/PageServer?pagename=Homepage\">Friends of the River<\/a>.\u00a0 After that first bitter defeat, the organization learned a thing or two and\u00a0went on\u00a0to permanantly protect\u00a02500 miles of river in the Golden State.\u00a0 Rivers that you, as a rafter, might\u00a0know well:\u00a0 the Tuolumne, the Merced, the\u00a0 South, Middle Fork\u00a0and North\u00a0Forks of the\u00a0American, the\u00a0Klamath . . . among many\u00a0others.<\/p>\n<p>Without\u00a0F.O.R&#8217;s expertise and energy, it&#8217;s quite possible we wouldn&#8217;t be in business.\u00a0 Sure, some of these rivers would still be flowing, but in what form?\u00a0 What kind of canyon do YOU want to raft in?\u00a0 Do you want to raft past a bunch of houses?\u00a0 Do you want to hear the drone of dredges, smell sewage and gasoline, and be afraid to let your kids go in the water?\u00a0 After a river trip you remember the thrills of the rapids, of course, but don&#8217;t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/common-merganser.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4058\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/common-merganser-300x89.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"89\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/common-merganser-300x89.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/common-merganser.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>you also remember the quiet of the canyon at night?\u00a0 I saw my first eagle, bear, and swarm of ladybugs\u00a0on a river trip&#8211;and I&#8217;m betting you did too.\u00a0 I&#8217;m betting your kids came home talking about not just the rapids, but the blackberries they picked and the Mama Merganser duck and her babies swiming in an eddy.\u00a0 It all adds up together to make river trips the magic things they are.<\/p>\n<p>Friends of the River is one of the things that makes all of this possible and right now, this very<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/236981.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4051 alignright\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/236981-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/236981-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/236981.jpg 575w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> moment, they really need us to return the favor.\u00a0 As with so many instititutions, F.O.R is having to tighten the ol&#8217; belt and make due with less.\u00a0 But we&#8217;re hoping they don&#8217;t have to cut back so much that they literally cease to exist.\u00a0 The risk of that is real.<\/p>\n<p>This is why we&#8217;ve decided to help&#8211;and we hope you, as a rafting\u00a0enthusiast,\u00a0will join us.\u00a0 For any&#8211;yes ANY&#8211;
