This was true for lower elevations in the valleys and higher elevations in the mountains. The results of this swing in temperature\u00a0from below normal to above normal has caused <em>serious<\/em> snow melt. <strong>Rivers are running at late-May levels even though it is July! <\/strong>We are on the downward gradual trend for 2011 flows, but\u00a0due to\u00a0residual snow in the High\u00a0Sierra, it will take a long time to arrive at &#8220;low flows&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Icefishing1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3609\" style=\"margin-left: 2px; margin-right: 0px;\" title=\"'da thunk!?\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Icefishing1-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Icefishing1-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Icefishing1.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My son was on the eastern side of the Sierra a few days ago; a place we \u00a0frequented during family backpacking trips when he was young. To his surprise (and mine) he couldn&#8217;t get to the lakes we usually fish at in June and July because he needed<span style=\"color: #2086c9;\"><strong> <em>snowshoes!!!<\/em><\/strong><\/span> Even if he did get there, they are still frozen and he would have needed to cut a hole in the ice and experience his first ice fishing&#8230;\u00a0<em>in July!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/AO-Flow-Predictions-2011-7-6-11.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3632\" style=\"margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 1px; margin-top: 1px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/AO-Flow-Predictions-2011-7-6-11-300x218.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/AO-Flow-Predictions-2011-7-6-11-300x218.png 300w, https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/AO-Flow-Predictions-2011-7-6-11.png 917w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a>Take a look at the latest report (left). You&#8217;ll see not much has changed in regard to flow predictions. It seems we have been fairly accurate in anticipating the flows. Keeping 35 years of detailed flow records certainly has helped,\u00a0in addition to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aorafting.com\/river\/flows.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> good data<\/a> from our friends in Sacramento at the Department of Water Resources.<\/p>\n<p>In this week&#8217;s chart, the key number is the second right-hand column at top: &#8220;Percent of normal for this date&#8221;. Unfortunately, the\u00a0Department of Water Resources\u00a0is no longer calculating this number because normally they don&#8217;t have any numbers to report! My guess is that is that we are about 200% or more at this time.
