At that time, there was a train coming through town, there was no freeway and Ygnacio Valley Rd was a &#8220;skinny little two lane road&#8221; according to Armstron<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">g&#8230;.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Raising his 5 kids here with his wife Dolores, they sold Christmas trees in town for 25 years, using various vacant lots around town.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Taco Bell, Big 5, Safeway and Target were all open spots back then where we used to sell our trees<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"> He says . . .<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">With his family, they started conducting backpacking, rock climbing, bicycling and rafting trips with all the children helping in the preparation and conducting of the trips.<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">As the years went by, the popularity of rafting grew so much, they gradually reduced the other activities, as well as the Christmas tree lot. With more emphasis given to rafting, it grew very quickly. Their early guides were their family and friends that grew up with them, and Armstrong still thinks of the hundreds of past and current guides as<\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">family and friends.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"> What a family it is! Nowadays more than 10,000 people annually go on All Outdoors rafting trips on 10 different rivers in California, making them the largest outfitter in Northern CA.<font face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Armstrong, at age 83, is still guiding and his love for Walnut Creek is evident.<\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Walnut Creek to me has been a real good mixed <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"> middle of the road <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"> community with great schools<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">.
